Nature and Significance of Management

Introduction

PDF
Management is the process of getting things done with the aim of achieving goals effectively and efficiently. Effectiveness means completing the job on time, while efficiency means doing it at minimum cost. In this chapter you will study the characteristics of management: it is goal oriented, pervasive, multidimensional (management of work, people and operations), a continuous process, a group activity, a dynamic function and an intangible force. You will learn its organisational, social and personal objectives, and why it is important for achieving group goals, increasing efficiency, creating a dynamic organisation, achieving personal objectives and developing society. The chapter then examines whether management is a science, an art or a profession, and the roles of top, middle and supervisory or operational levels of management. You will be introduced to the five functions of management: planning, organising, staffing, directing and controlling. Finally, you will study coordination, the force that binds all functions, its characteristics and its importance, and why it is called the essence of management.
